چکیده
Abstract Capillary rise within rough structures is a wetting phenomenon that fundamental to survival in biological organisms, deterioration of our built environment, and performance numerous innovations, from 3D microfluidics carbon capture. Here, accurately predict capillary rise, we must couple two phenomena: hemiwicking. Experiments, simulations, theory demonstrate how this coupling challenges conventional understanding intuitions roughness. Firstly, the critical contact angle for hemiwicking becomes separation-dependent so can vanish even highly liquids. Secondly, heights perfectly liquids differ between smooth systems, with same 0 ∘ angle. Finally, raised liquid volumes are substantially increased compared systems. To explain all quantitative accuracy, present Dual-Rise model valid general roughness, liquids, surface wettabilities.

Capillary rise between elastic sheets
When a paintbrush is dipped into a pot of paint and pulled out, surface tension forces cause the individual hairs in the brush to coalesce even as the brush becomes impregnated with paint. We study a simple model of this elastocapillary interaction in the context of the surface-tension-driven vertical rise of a liquid between two long flexible hydrophilic sheets that are held a small distance a...
متن کاملCapillary rise in tubes with sharp grooves
Liquid in grooved capillaries, made by e-ginserting a plate in a cylindrical tube, exhibits unusual spreading and flow properties. One example is capillary rise, where a long, upward tongue on top of the usual meniscus has been observed along the groove. We attribute the underlying mechanism to a thermodynamic instability against spreading for a (partial

We report on the capillary rise of water in three-dimensional networks of hydrophilic silica pores with 3.5 nm and 5 nm mean radii, respectively (porous Vycor monoliths). We find classical square root of time Lucas-Washburn laws for the imbibition dynamics over the entire capillary rise times of up to 16 h investigated. Provided we assume two preadsorbed strongly bound layers of water molecules...
متن کاملCapillary drops on a rough surface
We study liquid drops lying on a rough planar surface. The drops are minimizers of an energy functional that includes a random adhesion energy. We prove the existence of minimizers and the regularity of the free boundary. When the length scale of the randomly varying surface is small, we show that minimizers are close to spherical caps which are minimizers of an averaged energy functional. In p...
متن کاملPrediction of Time of Capillary Rise in Porous Media Using Artificial Neural Network (ANN)
An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to analyse the capillary rise in porous media. Wetting experiments were performed with fifteen liquids and fifteen different powders. The liquids covered a wide range of surface tension ( 15.45-71.99 mJ/m2 ) and viscosity (0.25-21 mPa.s). The powders also provided an acceptable range of particle size (0.012-45 μm) and surface free...
